New service: mentoring for personal trainers

Horsham-based Becky is a female personal trainer specialising in rehabilitation and building confidence in the gym. With years of experience coaching a variety of clients, she’s now offering coaching to others within the industry via personal trainer mentoring services…

With five years of in-person and online coaching under my belt, I’ve learned something from every client I’ve worked with, and continue to develop my skill as a personal trainer. I’ve also witnessed a broad range of coaching techniques, and had other gym users comment positively on my coaching style and the results my clients get.

When one gym member actively asked for my help to prepare for his own Level 3 Personal Training qualification, I knew that the time was right to formally offer mentoring services, and I’m excited to be opening this up! Here’s how I can help…

Preparation for Level 3 Personal Training

Something that I’ve already helped one person to do is pass their Level 3 Personal Training assessments. As things have shifted during the last few years, I’m seeing fewer PT courses being delivered face-to-face, and more happening online. This can be helpful in terms of accessibility, but when you’re learning to do a job that involves coaching people in-person, receiving your own training remotely means that there may be gaps in your knowledge and very few opportunities to practice prior to being assessed.

I did my PT training course in-person, and found the experience of getting to coach my peers (and watch them being coached) invaluable so, if you can’t access this due to the setup of your course, it’s something that I’m happy to offer.

Whilst I’m not an assessor, I have been through the process and know what they’re looking for, so am able to identify gaps in your technique and help you to adjust prior to attending your assessment. You’ll be able to treat me as a practice client, receive my feedback on your instruction, and keep practicing throughout a session to improve your confidence. I’ll then flip things around, treat you like a client, and demonstrate how I coach in order to give you other examples of how to hone your technique.

Perfecting your personal training coaching technique

Cueing has been one of my favourite things to master, and I think it’s a skill in and of itself. I’ve seen a lot of PTs struggle to get their point across to a client, and whilst it may be that one or other of them is having a bad day, or there are some other barriers to communication getting in the way, I often think that the frustration could be solved by thinking about things a little differently. Which is where I come in.

Whether you’d like me to observe a real client session, or role play through it ourselves, there are lots of hints and tricks I’ve learned along the way to make the client journey easier. I also bring a variety of prior experiences to my personal training practice: I’ve worked as an event manager (which is effectively spinning plates and fighting fires simultaneously), and a horse riding instructor, as well as other industries such as hospitality which have given me a laser-focused attention to detail, as well as the ability to work with a huge range of people, but still get a job done efficiently and effectively.

All of that adds up to me being a great coach who supports clients with ease, even when they’re so nervous that they can hardly move or think when they first enter the gym. I’ll teach you how to stay calm, when to change the plan, and how to make sure that your client leaves smiling and accomplished, even when they’ve arrived in a bad mood (we all have those days!).

Personal trainer business mentoring

A service that many offer, and most will do so with big promises and even bigger numbers. I’m here to do things a bit differently.

Having arrived at personal training via a career (and degree) in business, I’m here to cover the elements that your Level 3 training doesn’t. This isn’t about trawling the gym floor for sales, or telling you to make more Reels, or how to design an Instagram carousel in Canva. It’s more along the lines of things that you should keep track of in order to run a steady business and teach you where to put your energy, plus how to build and maintain a website that draws people in whilst you’re delivering coaching, sleeping, or away on holiday.

This isn’t about scaling a business so fast that you get altitude sickness – overnight success just isn’t a thing – it’ll instead help you to refine processes as you go, build a business that’s sustainable and prevents early overwhelm, and allows you to get better at what you do as you go along. All of which means that you provide a valuable service to clients you get on with. We’re talking actually living the dream, rather than buying it.

How to sign up for personal training coaching

If you’re an aspiring coach or already qualified and looking to upskill, we can work together face-to-face in West Sussex, or online. We’ll start with a power hour to find out where you’re at and what you’d like to achieve, with some early advice and strategies given. I’ll then offer you a bespoke package to make sure that you meet your goals. To book in, email me and we’ll get started as soon as possible!
